Spinning J Bakery and Soda Fountain

About

Spinning J is a café, soda shop, and pie shop in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. The heart of Spinning J is a 1928 soda fountain bar, saved from demolition and reassembled in their shop. Take a seat on a bar stool, and enjoy a handmade seasonal-fruit soda, a Thai tea milkshake, or a great cup of coffee. Our roots are vintage, but our menu isn’t frozen in time. Stop by for a morning coffee and fresh pastry on the go, homemade soup and sandwich for lunch, an afternoon treat or post-dinner dessert. We’ve got something for everyone, anytime of day.

Let me tell you how good this bakery is: we live nearby, and my boyfriend had been complaining about his commute to work nonstop and wanting to move soon to be closer to the highway. We discovered this bakery and are obsessed with everything on the menu. A few weeks later, after not hearing him complain but me wanting to be supportive, I said: let’s make a timeline to move. He said “....but....spinning j...” We are no longer moving. Thanks for saving me from moving!!!

Spinning J has a cozy neighborhood feel. That was nice. However, the food I had was just ok, and very over priced for portions. The tuna melt I ate was decent. I liked the bread a lot, but the sandwich could of used more cheese. Also, it was a bit of a let down that the sandwich came with a 1oz bag of store bought Vitner's chips. My total meal came to $18--I felt, love 'em or leave 'em, the sandwich should have at least come with house made chips for the price. The key lime hibiscus pie I had was not as good as I had hoped. I expected a creamy baked custard style pie, but it was more like a whipped cream ice box pie. I will say though the pie's graham cracker was a bright spot in my dessert. It was crisp, buttery and not too sugary sweet. That part of the pie was well done. Overall, I will have to think hard about going back to Spinning J.

Great stop for breakfast/lunch. Not a huge menu, but they know exactly how to do everything they serve. Can’t wait to come back!
