R. Lopez de Heredia, "Viña Tondonia", 2010
There are few wineries in Spain, or in the world, whose name conjures the heritage and prestige evoked by R. López de Heredia. Little about this winery has changed since its founding in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia. The winery still occupies the same historic cellars and is owned—and every detail of its operation is handled—by the family who founded it. Most importantly, the family owns every inch of the vineyards that supply their wines: for López de Heredia, tradition and conviction are life-long attitudes.

Michel Gonet, "Les 3 Terroirs", Blanc de Blancs, Extra Brut, 2017
Champagne is passion. On one hand it is a beverage that seamlessly represents celebration for many, and on the other is one of the most meticulously handled wine products on Earth. At Michel Gonet, the care goes from vineyard to cellar, from hand harvest to long lees aging. The result is a champagne of the highest quality and finesse. The "Les 3 Terroirs" cuvée highlights vineyards from the three villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Montgueux, and Vindey.

Soliste, "L'Age D'Or", Russian River Valley, 2015
Burgundy born-and-raised, Claude Koeberle is considered one of the world's foremost experts in winemaking, and his wines never cease to disappoint. "Soliste" comes from the name that winemakers in Burgundy use for a special barrel reserved solely for family and friends. Most of their wines are made in what he calls the "MonoClone" style, using single clones from single sites and aged individually in a single cooperage. "L'Age D'Or" is a true expression of Soliste wines—exceptional vineyards, meticulous grape selection, and an elegant balance of acidity and aromatics to create wines of complexity and finesse.

Domaine Vacheron, 2022
The Vacheron family name in Sancerre is viticultural royalty. Three generations ago the family took over their first vineyards. As their family grew so did the pedigree of their bottlings. From humble beginnings by then patriarchs, Denis and Jean-Louis, the estate now boasts all biodynamic farming, hand harvests, and some of the finest vineyards in the appellation. It is not a wine trying to reinvent Sancerre, but to be an elevated version of the classic style.

Domaine Laroche, "Saint Martin", 2022
Domaine Laroche is steeped in the history of Chablis. For more than 160 years, the Laroche family has been dedicated to producing top quality wines from the Chablis region. The domaine's headquarters, the Obédiencerie of Chablis, reveals a heritage dating back from the Middle Ages when the Canons of Saint Martin of Tours were making wine. The "Saint Martin" title pays tribute to a Roman cavalry officer who became a humble monk and was elected Bishop of Tours, eventually being named the patron saint of Chablis. The "Saint Martin" cuvée is the flagship wine of Domaine Laroche, a blend of the most beautiful estate plots in the appellation.

Dreissigacker, Rheinhessen, 2020
Jochen Dreissigacker has quickly ascended to the category of the elite producers of Germany's Rheinhessen. Jochen abandoned a career outside of winemaking, and joined the family winery following apprenticeships at other benchmark estates including the now-legendary Weingut Keller. Dreissigacker organically farms fruit from the most iconic vineyards in the Rheinhessen, producing laser-focused and textural wines that are delicious now and worthy of age in the cellar.

Domaine Douloufakis, "Aspros Lagos", Crete, 2021
Third generation winemaker, Nikos Douloufakis, takes immense pride in the steps his family has taken to create quality wine from native Cretan varietals. "Aspros Lagos" is no exception: crafted from the indigenous Vidiano grape, this wine shows richness and texture while remaining crisp and focused. While this wine can be enjoyed young, its best kept secret is its ability to age gracefully. Crete is magical, and so is its Vidiano.

Ken Wright Cellars, Yamhill-Carlton, 2021
It is the nature of human beings to tinker with things. While this is generally a good trait, certain things in the world are better left alone. At Ken Wright Cellars, minimal handling of wine is essential to preserve what it is: a gift of nature. The seed for a career in wine was planted squarely in Bourbon country of Lexington, Kentucky. While waiting tables to put himself through school, Ken was exposed to fine wines from regions around the world. The passion became a vocation when Ken left the Bluegrass State to attend enology and viticulture classes at UC-Davis. In 1986, Ken moved to McMinnville and started Panther Creek Cellars. His concept of focusing on vineyard-designate bottling began during those years and was cemented as a core philosophy in 1994 when Ken Wright Cellars was founded in historic downtown Carlton. Ken now makes a single vineyard bottling from 13 vineyard sites and is known as a pioneer of Oregon Pinot Noir.

Anthill Farms, "Campbell Ranch", Sonoma Coast, 2020
This trio of "ants"—Webster Marquez, Anthony Filiberti and David Low—met in 2003 while working at Sonoma's Williams Selyem Winery. A year later they opened Anthill Farms with two unchanging goals: to make wines that express the growing site and the characteristics of the vintage, and, above all else, to make wines that, simply put, taste good. These goals require gentle handling from crushing to bottling, judicious use of oak, and, perhaps most importantly, leaving the wine alone as much as possible. Since 2004, they have grown from producing eight barrels of wine to working with eight distinct single vineyard sites, earning them Food & Wine Magazine's "Most Promising New Winery" in 2009.

Ridge, "Three Valleys", Sonoma Country, 2021
Ridge first released the "Three Valleys" label in 2001. Unlike their single-vineyard wines, which reflect the distinctive character of each site, "Three Valleys" represents the blending of vineyards—winemaking at its finest. Ridge relies on nature and tradition rather than technology; they have named this style of winemaking "pre-industrial." Their approach is straightforward: find intense, flavorful grapes; intrude upon the process only when necessary; draw the fruit's distinctive character and richness into the wine.

This bottling of Château Plince is as powerful as it is seductive and as indulgent as it is pleasurable. Best enjoyed with a few years of age, the stellar 2015 vintage shows wondefully in the glass. The Moreau family has been farming this land for over a century. They are committed to traditional values, while using modern practices for the best possible results: both for the wine and for the Earth.

Guy Amiot et Fils, " Vieilles Vignes", 2019
In 1920, Arsène Amiot began acquiring parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet, including several premier crus and a few rows of "Le Montrachet." Under his direction, Domaine Amiot became one of the first to begin estate-bottling their production. Arsène's son, Pierre, took over in the 1930s and added more parcels, such as "Champgains", "Les Chaumes", and their parcel in Puligny-Montrachet, "Les Demoiselles." By the time Guy, the domaine's namesake, took over in 1985, the domaine had built up very impressive holdings and had passed the knowledge of how to best care for the vines down through generations. This continuity of care in the vineyards that led to solid consistency in the wines. In 1993, Guy's son, Thierry, took over and has been respecting the tradition and striving for improvement ever since.

Benjamin Leroux, 2014
Benjamin Leroux is a child wine prodigy who started studying winemaking at just 15 years old. Growing up in Beaune, Benjamin naturally found himself surrounded by vines, despite not coming from a winemaking family. After school, he cut his teeth at prestigious estates such as Cos d'Estournel, Drouhin, and Louis Jadot. In 1999, at the age of 24, Benjamin found himself appointed technical director of Comte Armand. Eight years later, Benjamin founded his own domaine, first buying grapes and, eventually, vines. These eight hecatres of vines in the hands of one of the most gifted winemakers in Burgundy often produce the benchmark of the vintage.

Stéphane Ogier, "Mon Village", 2018
The Ogier family has been rooted in Ampuis for seven generations. Stéphane, current owner and winemaker, knew from the age of six that he wanted to follow in his forefather's footsteps and become a winemaker. He completed his oenological studies in Beaune, working alongside some of the best winemakers in Burgundy. This time in his life was instrumental in forming his philosophy of winemaking and his laser-like focus on terroir. In 1997, he formally joined the family estate. Today, Stéphane farms twelve separate parcels, crafting wines that have become a reference point for the appellation and are sought after by the greatest chefs and most serious wine lovers around the world.

Alain Graillot, 2020
In France's Rhône Valley, there are few names as revered as Graillot. It was in 1985 that the late, legendary Alain Graillot, who after working with the venerable Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac, came back to his home in Crozes-Hermitage to start his own domaine. With each passing year, his devotion to the art of making hauntingly delicious Syrah from his organically farmed, stone-laden vineyards, was rewarded with an ever growing and highly dedicated following around the world. Alain's sons, Maxime and Antoine, have been in charge since 2008, continuing the legacy set forth by their father. All the work is still completely the same as it always was: hand-harvested, organic farming, whole-cluster fermented grapes, and aging the wines primarily in one-to-three year-old barrels.

Domaine Brun Avril, 2019
The Avril family has been in the Southern Rhône since the fourteenth century, with the domaine formally established in 2008. Run by husband and wife team, Nathalie and Jean-Jacques, their five hectares were part of an inheritance that changed the course of their lives. After deciding that they wanted to preserve the family's holdings, they studied viticulture. Despite being new winemakers, their style is about focus: they only produce a single wine per vintage and do everything they can to let the terroir speak for itself.

Carlo Giacosa, "Montefico", 2017
The Carlo Giacosa winery farms five hectares of vineyards in Barbaresco and has been run by the Giacosa family for four generations. Donato Giacosa founded the winery and helped shape the very hills of Barbaresco. Carlo, together with his wife, Carla, continued the family tradition, further developing the winery, and cultivating his roots along with those of his vines. Now it is Maria Grazia's turn, the latest Giacosa to run the estate. She works alongside her father and her son, Luca. The care that they lavish on their wines is what exalts the perfumes and the flavors in the glass.

Bergadano, "Sarmassa", 2016
Founded in 1974, the Bergadano family has always placed an emphasis on quality over quantity at their small two-and-a-half hectare estate. With annual production rarely exceeding 1000 cases, this is a true "insider's" Barolo. The flagship Barolo Riserva "Sarmassa" comes from the eponymous Barolo commune in the heart of the DOCG. Aromatic and finessed, the 2016 vintage provides a snapshot of the best Nebbiolo offers through the lens of one of the region's most underrated stewards.

Caprili, 2018
Caprili is located in the southwestern sector of the Montalcino appellation near the hamlet of Tavernelle. The estate was established by Alfo Bartolommei in 1965, when he split off from the famous Pieve Santa Restituta estate. Caprili is extremely well located, with most of their 21 hectares of vines planted on mineral-rich soils with significant amounts of limestone. Caprili is considered one of the old guard of Montalcino, producing wines that are staunchly traditional while still approachable. In the cellar, current winemaker Giacomo Bartommei, Alfo's grandson, works dutifully and naturally with a goal of keeping the winemaker's impact to a minimum.

Petrolo, "Torrione", 2020
The Petrolo Estate was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940s, and has been run by artist-turned-winemaker, Luca Sanjust, since the early 1980s. The wine is a blend of the grapes from all the vineyards of Petrolo, combining the native Sangiovese with Bordeaux varietals, keeping itself in the Tuscan tradition. In the last fifteen years, Petrolo has established itself as one of Tuscany's, as well as Italy's, great wineries, producing wine that tell, better than any other, the true identity of Italy's terroir.

Etna Rosso, Benanti, 2020
Etna is unlike many other wine producing regions in the world. Most notably the home of Europe's highest active volcano, Mt. Etna, one would not consider this to be an ideal place to grow grapes—dangerously steep, rocky soils, unpredictable weather, and the threat of volcanic eruption at any point. Very few are up for the challenge of making wine under such extreme circumstances. The work of these daring vintners with the region's indigenous Nerello Mascalese grape result in wines with energetic fruit, smoky aromas, with an elegant structure, making Etna Rosso the next big thing for Burgundy and Piedmont lovers alike.

Pago de Carraovejas, 2020
The ongoing pursuit of excellence best defines the career of José María Ruiz, the founder of Pago de Carraovejas. Working his way through the restaurant trade in his hometown of Segovia, José María started his own restaurant in 1982, which soon became one of the city's top-rated venues. Pago de Carraovejas, which loosely translates to "the place where the sheep walk by", was founded in 1988 and is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Ribera del Duero. This winery was a logical extension of José María's insistence on serving his restaurant clients the very best. The success and personality of Pago de Carraovejas wines are based on the raw material, capturing the rich landscape of its vineyards, situated on a steep hill overlooking the Duero River.

Luca, Paraje Altamira, 2020
The Catena family has been the face of Argentinian wine in the 20th century and beyond. Luca was founded in 1999 by Dr. Laura Catena, a fourth generation vintner, who joined her father's winery in 1995 after graduating magna cum laude from Harvard and earning her M.D. from Stanford. Shortly after, she founded the Catena Institute of Wine with the goal of carrying on her father, Nicolás', vision to put Argentinian Malbec in the same conversation as the best wines in the world.

Amyndeon, Alpha Estate, "S.M.X.", 2017
Makis Mavridis and Angelos Iatridis are two of the most respected viticulturists in all of Greece, and have been on the forefront of precision viticulture in Greece since 1997. The estate sits at some of the highest points of elevation in the PDO of Amyndeon. This is the coldest winegrowing region in all of Greece and is characterized by its incredibly sandy soils, producing wines of nervy quality and intense flavor. The "SMX" cuvée, composed of Syrah, Merlot, and Xinomavro, is Alpha Estate's answer to the French "GSM" blend. Powerful, supple, and inviting, open one to taste some of Greece's most cutting-edge wine.

Royal Tokaji, "Déli Fekvés - 5 Puttonyos", 2018
Tokaji: a dessert wine so nuanced and impressive that Catherine the Great set up a garrison in the town of Tokaji to protect its delivery. Emperor Franz Josef sent Queen Victoria bottles religiously for her birthday. Louis XV referred to it as the "Wine of Kings." Beethoven, Peter the Great, and Thomas Jefferson preferred it to all other sweet wines. Don't you want to join this company of characters?

Pierre Péters, "Cuvée Reserve", NV
Camille Péters, around 1919, was one of the first growers of the Champagne region to decide to bottle wine under his own name. In 1932, at the ripe age of 12, Pierre Péters, the eldest son of Camille, began to attend his first exhibitions alone and develop sales for his father's brand, and never looked back. He took over operations in 1944, and released his first vintage in 1946 under the "Pierre Péters" brand. The estate, now run by Rodolphe Péters, owns just over 19 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards, all of which are primarily located in the Côte des Blancs, where the soils are chalky and Chardonnay is king. Their flagship Champagne, the "Cuvée de Réserve", is made entirely Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes.
