Owl Bar

About

'Spirits Welcome!' since 1903.... In 1903, the Belvedere Hotel, with the Owl Bar as its most bewitching attraction, was built as Baltimore's first luxury hotel. Initially open only to men, the Owl Bar quickly became the hottest spot in town, and the non-stop party lasted 17 years until the "ban of the booze", Prohibition... While business was booming at the Owl Bar, it wasn't until Prohibition that it really hit its stride. As illegal hidden stills popped up around the country the Owl Bar became Baltimore's go-to speakeasy for sinful spirits. How to know when it was safe to purchase? That's where the Owls came in.... At the Owl Bar, patrons did not speak of booze, bookies or illegal products and services. They simply looked to the Owls. If their eyes were blinking, it meant that the shipment had made it and the feds weren't around. When the eyes weren't blinking be quiet, or be busted. Even Prohibition could not dim the lights and the nights at the Owl Bar. Yesterday, a hot and spicy history. Today, still serving it up.

$3 wine is neat but they could be a little bit more generous with their potato skins

Probably my favorite bar atmosphere in Mt. Vernon along with Brewer's Art just down the street. The food is amazing too and the happy hour is great-- just don't be like us and try to show up at 6:30pm on a Friday because it'll be full up for happy hour (and for a good reason!)
