The Little Red House

Saturday night was not my first visit here but I was excited to try the fixed price menu for the weekend - the chef's homage to Dunedin's Orange Festival. It definitely didn't disappoint! The first course was a lovely balance of shaved fennel, apples, oranges and smoked salmon. The entree was Duck a la Orange with the tenderest, tastiest duck breast I've had outside of France. The orange accent was just right combined with the juicy duck and wide noodles. Dessert was an intriguing take on tiramisu with Grand Marnier replacing the Marsala and orange instead of cocoa or coffee flavors. Not too sweet, very creamy and delicious. Choosing wine to pair with the courses was a breeze due to the small but curated and reasonably priced French wine list. Service was excellent and the ambiance charming. I'll be going back soon.

This was my first time here. I have been wanting to try this place since it wasSweet Peas. I really wanted to like this place but I wasn't impressed. I ordered a mimosa and the quiche of the day. The mimosa was served in the tiny ball mason jar glass, which was pretty small for being $7, and it also seemed like it had orange froth and not really any actual orange juice in it. The quiche was also not good. I LOVE quiche but I have never had a quiche like the one I had here. The base of the quiche was white, flan-like and wet, which made the crust on the bottom soggy. I am not sure how they made it but it was not enjoyable. I will say that the place was very cute, the waitress was friendly, and the quiche serving was pretty big but unfortunately I just didn't enjoy the meal. However, I would be willing to give the place another try.
