I have lived a life that has unwittingly made me a connoisseur of working-class bars. It's a necessary survival technique for any creative person whose true reality is my imagination and whose craft demands big chunks of solitude. But thankfully, an old friend & outstanding journalist impressed upon me early the crucial importance of a good, friendly, rowdy bar to a writer. He taught me that even when the last thing I wanted was alcohol or company, regular appearances at my chosen watering hole would, sooner or later, almost always prove vital. (A lesson I learned the hard way.) Like many writers, I move around quite a bit. A few years back I believed I had hit the Holy Grail of bars. The mother load. I was wrong.Sportsman's is the best damn bar on the planet.Period.
