Merakia

About

Established in September 2017, Andreas and Renee Typaldos, ,introduce Merakia, a word that modern Greeks use to describe doing something with all your being, with passion, putting all your heart and soul into your work… may result in madness! Greek mountainthief was the nickname given to men and women of greek bands of mountain highwaymen ("klephts,"meaning thieves) and irregular militia ("armatoloi") who were the revolutionary backbone of the greek war of independence of 1821. When fighting the ottomans in the mountainous terrain, these mountainthieves would feed themselves by stealing sheep and other livestock grazing on the mountains and cooking them on a makeshift spit. Quite a visual, huh? Merakia's own mountainthief and spitfire is Athenian chef Tasso Ballas who instilled the wild and woolly creative spark of the Greeks into our menu.

This restaurant has an allure. It is uniquely designed and has a pleasant vibe. Servers made you feel at home without overselling or up selling. I had the asparagus which was a simple preparation with olive oil and some lemon. Nicely cooked. The steak was just right and had a full flavor. The staff paired the wine well with the meat. I will definitely return to try the lamb which was another offering.

Merakia was featured on restaurant week for summer 2019. Went on a Friday night at 7:30pm. They were able to seat us in a nice booth (two people) that had a lot of room. Ordered the dips and baked feta for appetizers, both incredible. Large assortment of dips and tons of fresh baked pita bread. For our entrees ordered the steak and the lamb chops, both cooked to perfection and flavored wonderfully. Baklava for desert was fantastic. Food was overall incredible and atmosphere was very pleasant. The music was a little too loud and not what I would have picked for a restaurant but fit the scene and was easy to forget when indulging in the delicious cuisine

Service is great. Food is nice but pricey. The steak was fantastic (5 stars), the fish was solid (4 stars, ask for ladolemono on the side, otherwise it’s a little dry and bland), octopus was lovely (4.5 stars), the grilled calamari was disappointing (2 stars, barely any flavor to it), the tzatziki dip with warm pita break was nice (5 stars as well). We wanted to try the lamb special but by 8pm they already ran out of it, so make sure you get there early for the real treat. The place was not too crowded on a saturday night and the ambiance was lovely (greek music et al.) This won’t be my go-to spot but it’s definitely worth trying at least once if you like Greek cuisine.
