My family and I stopped by Madeira Cafe on Sunday - late afternoon. We were promptly seated by our waitress, Michele. She was very attentive and helpful with the menu - it was our first time trying a Portuguese restaurant . We started off w/the calamari - very good. My husband and I tried a pork dish with a side dish of rice and carrots. It was delicious. My daughter ordered the broccoli and chicken over linguine which she loved and there was plenty to go home. My son had the veggie pizza - which he also enjoyed and was also pleased he had plenty to bring back to his appartment. The service was great, the food was wonderful, a nice place to relax and we would definitely go back.Dan & Lynn

Good food and cheap prices, however service was very slow when we visited (Friday 5:30).Big bar and pool tables and a friendly staff round it out as a solid spot.

A nice example of a small family run Portuguese restaurant in the New Bedford area. The food is very good and can be a good value, depending on the dish. Service is quirky. Not the best place to go if you are planning to stay with your friends to chat after finishing the meal. One gets the unsubtle hint that it's time to pay up and get going unless you plan to order more. Yet, once the check arrives, it's hard to get someone to look at your table to pick up the payment. This is not unusual for places of this type. A local quirk?Overall I still like the place and recommend it for anyone who wants a good meal and nice family atmosphere. A great bet for people visiting the area, looking for an authentic taste of the area's Portuguese cuisine. Hard to get much more authentic than this, quirks and all.

I was at Madeira for the 1st time and ordered shrimp mosambique which i was worried cuz anywhere i go it's never marinated to perfection...well..it was even better than mine! And my husband had salmon...it was delicious. Restaurant was clean, people were very friendly..going again!!

Came across this place while in New Bedford and decided to try a new Portuguese restaurant. Walked in and it was completely empty but we stayed anyway. Started with the calamari which was just bad. Basically fried rings with banana peppers on top. No flavor. Then we ordered the steak plate that was so bad. Fries tasted like oil, rice had no flavor and the steak was so fatty and no taste. I hardly ate anything and was asked if there was something wrong and I stated that it was not good and the guy said its probably just me. Terrible food! A good restaurant would take the plate off the bill but that surely did not happen. I should of known that this place was terrible when we saw it was completely empty. If you want to eat real good, authentic Portuguese food go 15 minutes away to Portas Da Cidade in Westport for excellent Portuguese food that you'll truly be satisfied.
