The atmosphere was fantastic and the food was great. Really enjoyed the traditional food and the price for everything was very reasonable. We would definitely come back here in the future.

Even though many have had positive reviews of this place, the most recent experience is sadly one that must be mentioned. I had ordered the shepherds pie with a side of coleslaw and a root beer. The root beer came out already poured in a glass with ice, not in a bottle as I was expecting it, which made me feel a little cheated. But that is a side matter. The main issue is that within 10-20 minutes after finishing my meal and having left the restaurant, I had a running stomach. I had taken all precautions before eating by washing my hands at the restaurant, and wiped off all the utensils before using them. I don't know if this was due to the mishandling of the food, drink, or the food preparation itself, but it was serious enough where I will not be eating at Chowning's Tavern ever again.

This is the cutest, coziest place. The beef Trencher is amazing.

So much fun to take the family to. The food and prices were good. The hostest was a little short tempered and didn't seem to enjoy her job, but other than that I would recommend.

Food was really good. But service was a downer. Server could have been having a bad day and it showed. He was very cold, short answered and was hard to not take it personally. I still treated him respect. The restaurant is great, rustic, and very true to colonial decor and architecture. That means is a colonial house, and it is small. You will be dining on different rooms all who seem to have way more tables than I like. So I felt a little too claustrophobic. The room also reverberates making the multiple conversations going on seem louder. So, you won't be disappointed by the food. But my overall experience was just not that good. Not enough to come back, unless I have to.

Josiah’s in Colonial Williamsburg was awesome. The staff was very helpful. The meals were very delicious and this place was very family friendly. We plan to visit again soon.

Amazing food! A must try when in Colonial Williamsburg! The wait staff were very friendly, however the two ladies out front that were adding customers to the wait list, were very unfriendly and unpleasant to deal with. They did not bother to greet the guest waiting to check in, rather you had to greet them in order to get their attention. The only other negatives, were the tables are extremely close together and the seats are broken and very unpleasant to sit on. The dining area and bathrooms could use a good cleaning. Dispite these negatives, the food was worth the money, and we would eat there again.

This is not your standard tourist trap restaurant- they're actually good! Had the pasties and was in love then their apple cider sangria made it perfect. Definitely the best food I had while in williamsburg.

Excellent place. Transports you centuries back, great atmosphere, live old fashioned music and tales and above it all, excellent food. Shepherd's Pye will warm up your soul. Delicious.

We had such a nice experience here. The server was super friendly and the service was great. Our food didn’t take any longer than 15 minutes to come to our table and the prices were pretty normal. This dining experience is super unique and something worth doing. The food wasn’t anything super spectacular it was still good. I would suggest this restaurant to someone who wants to have a traditional dining experience and try something new.

Reservations help during busy times but you can walk up and wait or share a table with others

I don't believe they do. This place is a historical tavern and offer period fare.

Chownings is the only restaurant that does not take reservations. You have to walk up to the door and there'll be a costumed host or hostess that will take your name and give you an approximate time. If you are early enough the wait is only a few minutes.

They're not on Open Table for online reservations, but you may be able to call ahead. (As far as I know they're the only tavern in the historic district that doesn't have online booking.)

Only at the door

Were open 7 days a week 365 a year

It depends on the season. You can always refer to the dining section of colonialismsburg.com, and each historical tavern should list activities and events.

According to the calender they will be open. I would make a reservation just to be sure you get seated when you want to.

Colonial williamsburg site has a shop with some dishes but not the shakers. If you search google for 18th century shakers you may find something similar.
