Felt welcomed right from the start. Drinks were great and service was even better.

Great atmosphere and cocktails. Rather expensive though.

Harold Black will give you a quiet and cozy atmosphere for either a date night or for catching up with someone. The drinks are delightful. Whatever drink you're in the mood for, the mixologist will create it for you. I have never had a bad drink from here. I would recommend a visit. Make reservations for guaranteed seating.

We waited an hour after being seated to get half-filled and underwhelming drinks. Staff had zero game or interest for handling our complaints. Used to love this place. Clearly there is a weak manager now and what was once elite is now overpriced, overrated, and out of touch.

Great atmosphere and drinks

The atmosphere here is dark and intimate. The decor fits in perfectly. The drinks were perfect as well: strong and delicious. If you're not sure what to order give the bar tender your base spirit and flavors you like (I asked for gin and citrus).

It takes one bad experience to ruin the image. My girlfriend and I made reservations for after celebrating the Marine Corps Birthday. We arrive a few minutes earlier. After 5/10 minutes someone finally came out and told us it would be just a minute. 15 minutes go by, we have been waiting for about 25 minutes. We get seated, 5 minutes go by and they ask where is the rest of my party. They got me mixed up with another reservation. They left and we waited another 15 minutes. No one came to talk to us or take our order. We gave up and didn't want to wait any more and left. What was once my favorite place; is now my nightmare. Especially, if you are ever ten minutes late on your reservation, they will give up your table to someone else.

Food was amazing and the atmosphere is great as well.

A great speakeasy... albeit my first. Pricey, but the drinks were well crafted and the experience of finding the spot was what I imagined a modern day speakeasy to be like. Would recommend anyone to check it out.

It was pretty tricky to figure out how to get in. The place was so quiet they closed early, but didn't communicate that well to us. Good drinks, poor service, lack of communication. Needs work.

Everything about this place is geared towards keeping the atmosphere authentic. Don't walk in without knocking and being escorted. The drinks are hand crafted from scratch so do you're in a hurry, this isn't the place for you. The presentation, the and craftsmanship is very much a part of the enjoyment of this place. Even the jazz standards are played on an old hi-fi system. A perfect blend of dark and mysterious; as well as warm and welcoming. Hope you have reservations and hope you can find the place...it's worth the hunt.

Not only the best speakeasy in DC, but the best I've been to (and I've been to many in NYC, Grand Rapids, and Seattle). The manager, Maro, is the best and really runs a perfect show at Harold Black. It is dark and small, but that only adds to the appeal of stumbling upon the best kept secret in the city. The cocktails are the BEST I've had in DC and the food is great too. Maro is probably the best bar manager as well- best in DC!If you are looking for a great place for a romantic date, this is your place. Heck, if you want to show the best DC has to offer to a business client, this is your place too.

Worst experience of my life. I made a reservation using their telephone number for my friends birthday. When I went upstairs the man named “franz” called me a liar and said I did not speak to anyone. I showed him the telephone number on my phone and explained that I had called and had spoken to someone so I wasn’t sure what the issue was. He insisted that he had had been there all night and the speakeasy did not even HAVE a telephone number. This is obviously incorrect and I even tried to show him my phone where it illustrated I had dialed the speakeasy at 5 pm. I have no desire to ever go here again given this rudeness. I’d much rather go to Allegory or the Morris, speakeasys that actually give respect to customers.
