Best meal we had on our trip to Japan. Has an English menu. Staff, of course, were so polite, but also very kind, welcoming people with pride in their food. Prices were amazing (I recall ~$13 USD for the standard eel entree), and I still dream about this food almost a year after the trip.

Amazing eel in this tiny restaurant.

The price is not so expensive while the sea eel (anago) is delicious. I order the ikada (2eels) and my wife orders Hitsumaboshi. Both are delicious. There was a queque of 2 before us when we went there about 1 pm. There was no queque when it was around 1:45pm.

My go to place in Tokyo for anago (conger [salt-water] eel). It should be yours too. You can choose from several set meals or go a la carte, if you prefer. Last time I was there, I opted for a course meal which featured Chef Hirai’s cabbage with his own dressing, seasonal sashimi, three ways of cooking anago (salt-grilled, simmered, and fried), and, if you still have room, Hakomeshi (2 fillets of anago - simmered and grilled over rice - to be enjoyed plain, then with sesame, green onion and wasabi, and, finally, a sprinkling of yuzu shavings). Don’t forget to get an order of deep fried salted anago bones to start your meal! Highly recommended!

Really deserve their Michelin guide rating. Fantastic anago (conger eel). Tiny place run by friendly and nice ppl. Really hits the spot. A bit challenging to find thou, hidden in a tiny side street. Look for the large cake shop opposite with the red awnings.

Consecutive years on the Michelin List means you know you are getting something special. The restaurant is small and intimate and welcoming to me, a solo foreigner, looking for a wonderful Japanese meal. The pricing is exceptional value and the food is some of the best I’ve had in Tokyo. I highly recommend Hirai!

One of the best unagi restaurant in a very pricy area. Good service with English menu and explanatory notes to how to enjoy the unagi. Will definitely go back when I am next in Ginza.
