Empress Taytu Ethiopian Restaurant

About

Empress Taytu Ethiopian Restaurant offers a unique and flavorful dining experience. The traditions here are authentic, and all around you is the scenery, music, people, aromas, food, art, history, and culture of this ancient civilization. Optional traditional basket tables (mesobs) are in the huts (gojo bet) to fully experience Ethiopian cuisine and culture. Utensils are absent (unless otherwise requested), because in Ethiopia you eat with your hands by picking up your food with pieces of injera. Injera is the teff grain and wheat combination flatbread that will hold the various spiced meat and/or vegetable presentations known as 'wat's. There is a base layer of injera on which the 'wat' sits in your platter. More than half of our menu is vegan, and all of our entrées are gluten free (including a majority of the appetizers). Just remember to request the gluten free injera, which is made from 100% teff. The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is another experience we offer that makes Empress Taytu both unique and authentic. During this ceremony, we roast coffee beans from scratch and bring them out for you to see and smell. Then we grind the beans and brew your coffee the traditional Ethiopian way and serve your coffee in a handmade Ethiopian coffee pot (jebena) while burning frankincense. This is typically served after your meal to help cleanse your palate.

Very homey feel, lots of regulars with kids. But the prices get expensive if you don't try the usual combos. Also the coffee experience picture was misleading. I got this very dense bread instead of popcorn. I would have really liked the popcorn. Love the decor but don't sit in corners, I got bit by mosquitoes.

This is a dining experience -plan at least 2 hours. The menu has decent descriptions in English and the server was very helpful. Check out the website and menu before your visit. They were not busy on the Wednesday evening we went. Service is leisurely. We tried different foods, and had sourced tea. Lots of spice (heat) in the food. The coffee ceremony is fun and worth the extra time and money. 5 of us ate for $130.

Always an enjoyable experience, this was my families second time dining here and we all enjoyed the meal and ambiance yet again. My wife is a fan of all the informational and educational literature posted around the establishment. I am a fan of the music and videos playing on the t.v., the service once again was spot on and the food amount and quality has not faltered. I had another mixed drink this time the Sevastopol I think it was called nice drink with a kick. This is a nice date night spot or hang with friends spot. If you happen to be in the area or even if you aren't you should give this spot a go. The prices are not bad at all for what you get.
