We had lunch here. The food were great and authentic. Size were great for us. Steak were a little harder, but chicken was good. Service was good as well. Would definitely recommend it.

¡La comida aqui es mejor! (The food here is the best). I've traveled all over Mexico, speak Spanish, and I live in Phoenix, therefore, I know Mexican food. Please ignore the ignorant reviewer who referred to this place as "South American." The owners of El Matate are from the Mexican State of Tlaxcala. This is a family-run "hole-in-the-wall" (compliment) with busy times like most legitimate restaurants. Relax, don't be in a hurry. Enjoy the REAL Mexican food!

Had an excellent, authentic meal here. Friendly people and almost everyone in the restaurant was speaking Spanish (a good sign!). Big portions, delicious food, at reasonable prices. Loved it.

This was by far the WORST dining experience of my life. My two friends and I are in our mid 20s, clean cut, and we always treat servers with respect. When our server took our order, we smiled and thanked her, then we watched table after table of people (at least 4 tables) who came in after us, get their food, eat, and even leave, before our food even came out. We spent 50 minutes waiting for our food while we the waitress slipped everyone else’s orders in before ours. Our server wasn’t necessarily rude, she just blatantly ignored us and avoided us since we were the wrong color in her eyes. She was very kind to some of her other tables.I will never go back. I do not treat anyone differently based on the appearance, but apparently this establishment thinks its acceptable to do that. I have never felt more unwelcome and uncomfortable in a restaurant in my life.

Excellent place, good seasoning friendly atmosphere family atmosphere

I don't know what happened but I only ate a burrito and castilla with sauce and it cost us 35$ maybe there was a misunderstanding but in any other restaurant you can get triple that for the same amount.
