Paul McKinney, a retired sea captain, commercial real estate broker and investor located on Camp Bowie West, saw an opportunity when the former Steak & Ale building down the street at 7101 Camp Bowie West went on the market. He purchased it out of bankruptcy when the Steak & Ale/Bennigans Corporation went under in 2008. By the time the purchase of the vacant site was finalized in July 2009, thieves had stripped all the copper wiring and plumbing out of the building. McKinney has purchased several other industrial and office properties over the years. He was used to refurbishing, recycling, and making ready for reuse in the market, but this beautiful well-built building has been quite a challenge. Not finding a buyer or tenant in the down economy after bringing the building back up to code, McKinney decided to completely remodel the building and open his own restaurant. By adding a covered patio, an indoor/outdoor bar, stage, and huge salad bar, he was able to keep much of the charm of the English Tudor style building yet modernize it to serve today's customers. He and his wife Mary, a Spanish Professor at TCU, opened Buffalo West in September 2012. McKinney admits there is a tough learning curve in the restaurant business and they have made their share of mistakes, but they are on the right track and moving forward. The food is superb and the service is awesome. They are very proud of their staff. Everyday new customers are dining there and the repeat customers love it and bring in more friends to try it out. General Manager Chris Piekarski and McKinney work well together developing a corporate culture based on the "Golden Rule", and moving Buffalo West toward being not only the neighborhood place to go, but a destination restaurant known for its prime rib, steaks, and upscale comfort food, along with a comfortable, casual, relaxing dining experience. Along with great food and service, Buffalo West diners enjoy the local musicians that are brought in Thursday through Saturday to play on the patio. Playing classic rock to country, Buffalo West has brought in great bands like: Time Bandits, Hwy 80 West, Uptown Drifters, Hill City, Second Hand Soul, and Blackbirds. McKinney encourages the readers to give them a try even if you tried them earlier, it just gets better and better.

Impressed with the place, the food had plenty of flavor and portions were more than one person could handle. If you come here, opt-in for the salad bar because it is another experience within itself; to include the steaming soups. Decor is Western and it does make it feel like you have traveled to the "West". Service is ok, nothing to brag about the service, you might have to remind a server a few times about a drink but if you can get past the service, it is worthwhile.

This restaurant would have gotten 5 stars, but the tall bartender/waiter should drop the chip on his shoulder. His name may have been Clayton as he was waiting on the table by the bar as well. Our waiter, Jimmy, was awesome. My wife ordered an Old fashioned, but it was very strong. So, she asked if they could just add some coke to tone down the whiskey. When Jimmy told the bartender we overheard the bartender say, "I refuse to add coke to it and proceeded to just add more sugar". It was still too strong. My wife got a strawberry margarita instead. The steak was amazing as well as the salad bar. Perfect restaurant if it wasn't for the attitude and refusal of the bartender.
