Cosy place.

We have had two great experiences! The food is delicious, and the service is friendly and attentive without being smothering. I noticed we were helped by two different people, and the service was so seamless it felt like just one person. It is a small place with small booths and a bar. It is such a warm, welcoming place, and it feels like a neighborhood bar. We weren't part of the neighborhood except for our short time here, but we were treated like regulars. It makes me want to make this a regular place even though we live thousands of miles away.

Longtime favorite. Great location, cozy ambiance inside, good service, and delicious French dip sandwich.

Stop by here when on Eastern Market. Their brunch is fantastic. The place is cozy, love their decor, servers are friendly.

My husband and I arrived in Washington DC late in the evening yesterday and found the Boxcar Tavern when they were about to stop serving. They made us welcome and we both ordered salads (it was the end of July and hot). Both my chicken caesar and my husband's spinach were exemplars of the art and went down nicely with a New Zealand sauvignon blanc. We were especially grateful to the staff for allowing us time to finish the bottle without rushing; it had a screw top and they could easily have encouraged us to take it back to our Airb&b but they gave us all the time we needed. Incidentally, we understand that our Airb&b host designed the interior of the Boxcar Tavern which, with warm mahogany used throughout, was cosy and in keeping with the name. We may well return tonight if our travels round the city leave us well placed to dine there. Thank you Boxcar.

Phenomenal service. Looked for a reason to go with four stars - the drink selection isn’t massive, the food is good but perhaps not outstanding, not a lot of group seating - when I realized I was being nit-picky and every time I’ve gone I’ve had a great experience. Highly recommend especially if you’re meeting up with a friend or two and don’t want to make reservations or break the bank.
